Q I’m already thinking ahead to next autumn, because my Thoroughbred loses weight in winter. What time of year should I start tackling this to help him maintain condition?

Jasmine says… Throughout evolution horses have adapted to changing seasons with their bodyweight fluctuating accordingly — gaining weight during the spring and summer, when grass is abundant, to help see them through the tougher autumn and winter when grass is sparse. At that point, they lose weight ready for the cycle to repeat itself.
