Midget magic
Angela Howie, Peter Shaw and Darren Woods all agree that good things really do come in small packages. All three of these lucky devils live in Tasmania, one of Australia’s tiniest and prettiest states and, in keeping with the small is beautiful theme, each of them owns an MG Midget.
UK fans of these compact sports cars already know that taking one on as a fun, cheap to run and easy to care for classic is practically a no-brainer; sourcing spares has never been easier with British Motor Heritage providing a wide range of OEM-specification parts in addition to a host of other manufacturers also getting in on the after-market action.
But what’s it like to actually live with a Midget here in Australia? To find out, we lured our trio of Tasmanian MG owners to the historic township of Ross with the promise of curried scallop pies (yes, they’re an actual thing and Ross is famous for them).
Having travelled 75 miles from Hobart in the island’s south, Peter Shaw arrives first in his yellow 1971 MkIII. Angela Howie is next to wheel in after a 50-mile journey from Launceston in her bright red 1968 example. Finally, Darren Woods, also hailing from Hobart, lands mere minutes later piloting his crisply presented 1969 Midget wearing White Duco.
