A RARE BREED ideal for organic blocks
What’s so different about owning a rare breed of livestock? Nothing really. They have the same physical requirements of feeding, water, fences and shelter – but when someone learns you have a chunk of dirt, bit of bush, slice of paradise or a lawn so big you have to use livestock to keep the grass down, they inevitably ask: “What kind of livestock do you carry?” And I answer: “You would never have seen one, or even heard of them.”
SEARCHING THE WORLD OVER
Not only is the Hinterwald probably one of the rarest breeds of cattle in New Zealand, by number it’s also one of the rarest breeds in the world.
How many straws of purebred Hinterwald semen are available for purchase from anywhere in the world this year? None. How many Hinterwalds in Australia or South America? Nada. There’s a very small number of animals in USA, none in Canada; they’re very few on the ground anywhere) show fewer than 3000 animals worldwide.
