April 28, 1996, is a date Australia will never forget – on this chilly Sunday afternoon, terror was unleashed in Port Arthur, Tasmania.
The horrific tale of the Port Arthur massacre remains so raw that even now, on the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, details about what was then the world’s worst killing spree by a lone gunman are beyond distressing.
Martin Bryant, armed with three deadly guns and over 400 rounds of ammunition, killed 35 people and injured 23 others in Port Arthur’s Broad Arrow Cafe, across the historic site and in a range of nearby locations.
