Until the King’s death in 1952, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh had lived with their young family in Clarence House. And there they would have stayed if Philip had had his way, it is thought. But the then Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, insisted on them moving to Buckingham Palace – the official London residence of the monarch since the time of Queen Victoria.
