ON April 1, 1995, the UK was thrown into a short-lived panic due to an alarming announcement printed in the press that Polo mints would no longer be produced with holes. Justifying its controversial action, the manufacturer stated it was acting ‘in accordance with EEC Council Regulation (EC) 631/95’, a ruling that required ‘producers of tubular foodstuffs’ to remove holes from their products.
