What I’m Bingeing: Calls

ORIGINAL DRAMA

What you don’t see can terrify you. The innovative nine-episode sci-fi thriller on Apple TV+ harks back to the days of classic radio drama in a series of increasingly panicked phone calls illustrated only by sound waves or other graphic tools. We never see the callers—the voice cast includes Joey King, Aubrey Plaza, Nick Jonas and Lily Collins—but we feel their fear as their world becomes threatened by inexplicable and deadly anomalies involving time and space. I sampled the first out of curiosity and couldn’t stop watching—er, listening. What makes this a perfect binge is the series’ brevity, with chapters varying in length from 13 to 21 minutes. It’s over before you know it, but may unnerve you enough to want to call your mommy.
