Gardeners have always been natural environmentalists. It’s not just that we like growing plants, but also that we hate throwing anything away. Put your hand up if you don’t have a towering stack of old pots behind the shed that you’ve been reusing for years. And who hasn’t turned up to a friend’s house with a bundle of stems wrapped in damp kitchen roll?
We’re inveterate recyclers because, through watching our gardens all year round, we understand how the natural cycle works. And there is no one more attuned to the effects of climate change than the gardener whose flower bed never used to flood every summer or whose wisteria has been coming out a few days earlier each year.
