I WASN’T ENTIRELY SURE WHAT TO EXPECT from the A35. Early reviews indicated that it was altogether more complete and rewarding than AMG’s first attempt at a hot hatch, the underwhelming A45 of 2015-18. However, they also suggested that it had its sights set firmly on the Golf R, which wasn’t entirely music to my ears. Said Volkswagen is an eminently sensible target, of course, for it is quick, capable, polished, and highly desirable to many, but I can’t say that it’s a car I yearn to be behind the wheel of. For me, it just lacks charisma.
