THREE-SHOT SHOWDOWN

#01: JOHN BILDERBACK

Curse you guys, three images sounded easy! I agonised over tens of thousands of images and narrowed it down, eventually, to about three hundred! There are many classic also-rans and leaving them out has left me with a crumbled state of consciousness, but anyway, here are the three I finished with, in no particular order:

RIDER: REO STEVENS

LOCATION: BACKYARDS, OAHU

YEAR: 2017

This is my home break and my homey. I’ve been shooting Reo since 2001 and, while always giving him abuse, he has become one of the most incredible riders on a kite. The section he is about to pull into is no trivial shoulder section and there are a few possibilities for what will happen next that would preclude any sensible person doing this.

Fortunately for me Reo is not afflicted by an abundance of good sense. A wave half this size can pound you into the reef and hold you there, push you under a ledge
