Wilson Cruz — who sprang onscreen as sweet gay teen Rickie on opposite Claire Danes and Jared Leto — was the patron saint of Gen X TV. It was still years before other milestones, offered up a queer couple, a decade before slightly destigmatized being a Black gay man, and a full 25 years before told the stories of Black and brown LGBTQ+ folks to mainstream audiences. For my friends, Rickie was the first unabashedly out queer series star age. When ABC canceled , I joined with legions of disappointed fans who donated money to what became the first internet campaign to try and keep a TV show airing. I had to forgo lunch for a week to do so. (“It almost worked!” Wilson tells me.)
