Reinventing the chartplotter

Today’s MFDs (multi-function displays) are powerful devices, yet most of us continue to also rely on phones or tablets with 4G connectivity for weather forecasts, tidal streams and heights, as well as route planning.

Jorge Sevillano, founder of Norwegian start-up Orca, believes this approach is inefficient and distracts us from what we should be looking at, especially in pilotage situations. He says “shifting attention between multiple screens and systems is troublesome because you end up paying less attention to your surroundings.”

The idea behind the Orca Co-pilot is therefore to combine these varied functions seamlessly into a single affordable device. This minimises complexity and makes each function easier to access.
