INCREASED BIOMASS
The Namib Desert is a hyper-arid ecosystem receiving sparse and highly unpredictable rainfall – an average of just 19mm per year. Namibia’s flora and fauna relies more on the coastal fog as the most reliable source of water.
Periodic rain is vital for the germination and establishment of dominant perennial species (such as and ) that then use fog water for continual growth and reproduction. These plants contribute to the majority of the floral biomass, and many animals depend on them for survival.
