THE JEWELS OF JASPER
The cliffs, valleys and peaks in Canada’s Rocky Mountains hug myriad lakes, rivers and streams that are full of trout, as I dis covered a few years ago. The massive Jasper National Park is the most extensive one of its kind in the Canadian Rockies and has one of the largest concentrations of low elevation lakes in North America. The picturesque mountainside township of Jasper in western Alberta is the gate way to some of the park’s best rainbow and brook trout fishing, and is just 30 miles southeast of the scenic and produc tive Maligne Lake.
The beautiful glacier-fed Maligne, which means “evil” or “wicked” in French, is almost 5,500 feet above sea level and is surrounded by fir trees and soaring, snow-capped mountain peaks. It is the largest lake in Jasper National Park, the largest glacier-fed lake in the Canadian Rockies and the second largest glacier fed lake in the world. The area’s breathtaking scenery includes a number of glaciers and waterfalls.
