STANLEY KUNITZ MEMORIAL PRIZE

Joy Priest of Houston won the 2020 Stanley Kunitz Memorial Prize for “A Personal History of Breathing.” She received $1,000 and publication in American Poetry Review. The editors judged. The annual award is given for a single poem by a poet under the age of 40. (SEE DEADLINES.)

American-Scandinavian Foundation

TRANSLATION PRIZES

Jennifer Russell and Sophia Hersi Smith, both of Copenhagen, won the 2020 Nadia Christensen Prize for their translation from the Danish into English of Rakel Haslund-Gjerrild’s novel Alle Himlens Fugle. They received $2,500 and publication of an excerpt in Scandinavian Review. Alexandra Glynn of Park Rapids, Minnesota, won the 2020 Leif and Inger Sjöberg Award for her translation from the Finnish into English of Anna-Mari Kaskinen’s book of hymns Laulu. She received $2,000 and publication of an excerpt in Scandinavian Review. The American-Scandinavian Foundation prize jury selected the winners. The annual awards are given for unpublished translations of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction from a Nordic language into English. The next deadline is September 1.

Banipal Trust for Arab Literature

SAIF GHOBASH BANIPAL PRIZE FOR ARABIC LITERARY TRANSLATION

Kay Heikkinen of Chicago won the 2020 Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation for her translation from the Arabic into English of Huzama Habayeb’s novel Velvet (Hoopoe, 2019). She received £3,000 (approximately $4,125). Omar Al-Qattan, Justine Jordan, Nii Ayikwei Parkes, and Paul Starkey judged. The annual award is given for a book of poetry or fiction translated from the Arabic into English and published in the previous year. As of this writing, the next deadline has not been set.
