BEA ALONZO SWEET REVENGE
*This interview with Ms Alonzo was conducted on February 28, 2021 for the April issue of MEGA Entertainment.
Having written soap operas for thirteen years, I know that a teleserye heroine has either of only two character motivations – search or revenge. Bea Alonzo, being a heroine of many teleseryes, is all too familiar will this dramaturgy.
“Well, to be honest I don’t like the word revenge. But if it’s clickbait for a story of woman empowerment, then I’m all for it,” Bea cautions me.
Because in the past couple years, Bea has never exacted revenge on anyone. She simply doesn’t believe in it. She believes, however, in the search for truth.
“Alam ko naman lalabas din yung totoo. Eventually people are going to know. People are not stupid. They know. And so as long as I know the truth, sometimes I just have to really take a deep breath and just let it go,” Bea explains.
Most of the time, revenge is the course of action someone who has been wronged takes, but as much as Bea has been wronged, she has chosen to focus on herself, to improve herself and to celebrate herself.
“Yes, it’s a celebration. It’s my 20th year (in show business) but I’m only 33. I’m making all these big decisions on my 20th year! I am only able to muster the courage to do everything that I want now, on my 20th year,” Bea proclaims.
A major decision Bea has made was leaving Star Magic, her home base for her entire career to be managed by veteran and legendary talent manager Shirley Kuan.
“WhenMr.M(JohnnyManahan)left,Iwasaskedthequestion of whether to leave or not by him and Direk Lauren (Dyogi). I was given the opportunity to decide. For the first time I was asked, Parang first time For the longest time, whenever Star Magic, parang ‘Of course!’ So automatic na ‘ But first time, I was asked. it took me a while to really decide. It was really emotional,” she explains.
