How did your transfer to Arsenal in 1997 come about?

At the time I was playing for Lourinhanense on loan from Sporting, where I never had the chance to play an official game. I did well at the Toulon Tournament that summer [helping Portugal reach the final against France] and it proved a life-changing event for me. Some Arsenal scouts and Arsene Wenger himself had been watching, and a few days later my agent received a call from Arsenal.

What was Wenger like?

A brilliant person. A very polite and intelligent man. I’ll be forever grateful for what he did for me, not only at Arsenal, because he was also crucial to my Fulham transfer years later.

He helped you to join Fulham?!
