A HISTORY OF A PILE-DRIVING SENTINEL WAGGON IN AUSTRALIA

The Foundation Co. Ltd undertook contracts for the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramway Board (M&MTB) and used a specially-modified Sentinel steam waggon with a steam hammer mounted at its rear for breaking up the redundant concrete cable tunnels. This steam waggon has somewhat remarkably survived into preservation - albeit without the steam hammer.

The tramways, more than the railways, promoted the development of the suburbs of Melbourne because of their numerous stops and greater reach and thus significantly influenced the development of the greater city area.
