that's life!

Welcome!

One of my favourite things about searching for stuff on the Internet is all the other random facts that will appear at the same time. And it’s even better if I had always thought that sandwiches bought at the shop tasted better, but I never knew that it was a ‘thing’ that smart people had actually investigated. But I clicked on the link and there it was. Researchers at a US university believe the answer lies in the fact that extended exposure to a stimulus (in this case, the sandwich) decreases the person’s desire to actually eat it. In other words, seeing the sandwich being made makes us feel less excited about eating the real thing. Not that I’m suggesting everyone gets excited about eating a sandwich. But this made complete sense to me. When I was at school, it was a huge treat to buy my lunchtime sandwich from the tuckshop rather than bringing it from home. Now, my mum was a good sandwich maker and I particularly loved the corned beef and pickle sandwiches she used to make for us after we’d had corned beef for tea. But for some reason I could never put my finger on, sandwiches bought from the tuckshop always tasted better. Maybe it had something to do with the way they were cut. Another study by a US university found that diagonally-sliced sandwiches were the most popular style by far. And don’t even get me started on crusts. Turns out there is a German study conducted in 2002 which found that crusts were healthier than the rest of the bread. All of which has just served to remind me that it’s lunchtime. I’m off to buy a sandwich!
