REGARDING the achievements of rural vicars (‘), I would draw your attention to Revd John Thorneycroft Hartley. He is the only clergyman to win Wimbledon, in 1879 and 1880, and was runner-up in 1881, despite suffering a bout of sickness. His first triumph was the more remarkable, as he travelled back to Yorkshire mid tournament. On Saturday evening, having won his quarter-final, the Reverend caught the train home and took services as usual on Sunday. He stayed overnight with a dying parishioner
