A couple springs ago I shot a turkey at 57 long steps that would have been safely out of range just a few years prior to that. But some of today’s best turkey loads deliver performance I couldn’t have dreamed of when I shot my very first bird in 1987. Of course, I couldn’t have dreamed of paying $10 per shell back then, either.
There’s a wide variety of turkey hunting ammunition on the market now, both in terms of price and performance. You can spend a dollar per shell on ammo that will do everything you need it to do inside 40 yards, or you can splurge on ones loaded with tungsten super shot (TSS) and readily drop birds out past 60 yards. Between the two extremes lies a considerable middle ground.
