When rats start to multiply

Q How do I get rid of the rats underneath my bird table? They are becoming increasingly bold and appear to be multiplying in number. I don’t have a gun, or a terrier, and I do not want to use any poison.

A Rats are opportunists and will set up base near a food source, regardless of where it is.

To get rid of them, start by finding out where they are coming from and remove anything unwanted that harbours them. This will be fairly easy if they have made their home in a pile of rubbish, but a little more difficult if they are under your shed.

Then move the feeder away from any cover such as hedges, fence panels, plant pots and so on. This is because rats dislike open ground and prefer to stay out of sight and under cover. Then reduce the amount of food you are putting out,
