Cornish Shrimper celebration
Following on from the Crabber 24 MkI, the Shrimper 19 put designer Roger Dongray and builder Cornish Crabbers even more firmly on the map. It remains the company’s most popular boat. This year the owners association, possibly one of the largest anywhere, celebrates its 40th anniversary, all of which is excuse enough to take a closer look at this iconic design.
Dongray had already designed the Crabber 24 MkI when, in 1978, he drew a 19ft little sister for his own use. Local carpenter and builder, Mike Hughes, liked her look and offered to help finish her.
Potential buyers started lining up as soon) decided she’d fit nicely between their 16ft Coble and 24ft Crabber Mk1; and the first GRP Shrimper (sail No11) launched in 1980.
