3 BONNARD

“Sometimes a drawing that you feel wasn’t successful has given you more than you realise”

When I draw from another artist’s painting, what I am trying to do is to search for the underlying architecture of the picture. I want to lose myself in it and have the artist gradually reveal why the shape making, tones and colours are the way they are in the picture. I always come away with a deeper appreciation for a painting from which I have drawn. When it is a great painting, such as the ones in this series, the process helps me to see how complex and surprising and wonderful it truly is.

Making drawings from Pierre Bonnard’s , on display at Tate Modern, has given me an even stronger admiration for all of – also in the Tate collection – to try to invent an alternative composition from the final painting. Sometimes a drawing that you feel wasn’t successful has given you more than you realise through the process of being made and because of what it has taught you.
