Like most farmers, Dirk Westrup needs to trim costs while still maximizing cereal yield. Knowing that he would need to respect new local rules on maximum fertiliser rate, he looked for a more flexible way to match nitrogen application to plant growth than his old Yara N-sensor.
“I’ve always used a balanced application strategy right up to ear emergence”, he says, “Giving areas of poor-developed plants more fertiliser than well-developed ones, so to bring the two into line.” He still does that initially, but later switches dry-area crops to a growth-orientated strategy so only well-developed plants get the higher rates. He reckons that where water is short, patches of poor plants won’t catch up anyway.
