Living in Liguria

Tucked far up in the northwest corner of Italy, Liguria is a rainbow-shaped arc on the map, hugging the Mediterranean for 150 miles between the south of France and Tuscany. It’s a blessed location. The seaside here is all beachy gaiety, while the land behind it rises quite steeply and prettily into wooded hills and mountain slopes. The arrangement makes for wonderful views everywhere but also gives Liguria some of the balmiest air and weather in Europe.

This last fact was not lost on moneyed asthmatics and consumptives of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who came here to convalesce in style and who were followed by artists and writers looking for recuperation and inspiration under the kind Ligurian sun. Beautiful Art Nouveau villas sprang up to accommodate these sophisticated incomers, as well as handsome grand hotels, charming gardens, fine cafés and the odd casino or two – all rendering Liguria a steadier, more lovely place.
