Time for radical change in local authority governance

ACCORDING to the country’s auditor-general, most of South Africa’s 257 municipalities are in a disastrous financial position. The damning auditor-general’s report further accentuates only 33 (13%) of our municipalities are in full compliance with the relevant legal requirements and produced quality financial statements and performance reports. despite several governance interventions since the establishment of the local government some 20 years ago, local government is regressing due to the lack of accountability and a culture of tolerance for transgressions and the transgressors.
