Do you need me now or can I stay in and play?” asks Olympic windsurfing champion Barbara Kendall, who has just run out of the water, where she’s been wing foiling with her daughters Samantha,19, and Aimee, 15. She’s having a great time and doesn’t want the fun to end.

It’s just prior to Auckland’s latest lockdown and they’re in the ocean near their home, north of Auckland, enjoying their new sporting obsession – wing foiling, the latest in board sports, where sailors hold a wing sail and slice through the water on a hydrofoil, like an America’s Cup boat.

Like elegant herons flying through the water together in a tidy row, these three make it look easy, but there’s a lot of skill and practice that goes into making it look that simple.

The Olympic triple-medallist loves water sports and her two daughters have followed closely in her footsteps.
