RUGBY MIRRORS everyday life, it embraces every character. Jonny Hill? He’s in the Courtney Lawes camp, a laid-back dude. Not obvious captaincy material. In fact, for away club games he’s happy to avoid the changing room ahead of kick-off, preferring the sanctuary of the stands, where he can chill to music or send a text or two.

Yeah, a relaxed type of guy. Hill was on an England Rugby podcast the week after the Calcutta Cup match and looked like he was falling asleep. Podcast host Dylan Hartley asked him what his USP was. “I think I can bring a calmness to the squad,” he answered.

That was needed after the dismal Six Nations performance against Scotland, when England’s lack of ambition, inter alia, prompted scathing criticism. “We didn’t fire a shot,” says Hill, 26, of that 11-6 first-round loss. “It’s frustrating but Scotland came with a plan and executed it really well.
