Ship happens! KIWI SAILOR’S TERROR AT SEA

Our boat was more than halfway across the North Atlantic Ocean, headed for Greenland, when our skipper Ross Field told us to prepare for our first storm.

“We’re going to get some strong winds – up to 40 knots – and I think it’ll be worse than predicted,” he said. I didn’t understand his logic, but I trusted Ross’ judgement.

He had sailed around the world nearly five times, including with Sir Peter Blake on in the 1990 Whitbread Round the World Race. Since then, he’d bought a 55-foot expedition yacht he’d, which had been Peter’s nickname for him.
