Shooting in Hampshire is of a nature that will compare favourably with that to be obtained in the more noted counties of England. Being for the most part agricultural, Hampshire is essentially a partridge country, and is eminently adapted to the requirements of this bird, as has been shown at Lord Ashburton’s estate at Alresford, where a few years ago, the record bag of partridges for Great Britain was made — 4,109 in 1887.
Not only does this land exactly suit the partridge but hares also thrive in an amazing manner. Possibly there is no keener preserver of game anywhere in the country, and the number of partridges and hares to be seen on every hand was truly astonishing; so much so
