South Africa’s 40 000-plus commercial farmers employed 808 000 workers in the third quarter of 2020, down 8,2% on the same quarter of 2019. Assuming a family size of four (a conservative estimate), farmers provide homes and livelihoods for more than 3,2 million people. Wages and salaries amounted to an estimated R20,46 billion in 2019/2020, about 5,6% of total direct expenditure.
