Gold Shines and Silver Shadows at Heritage NYINC Auction
IN THE JANUARY issue of World Coin News I wrote an early preview of the Heritage NYINC aligned auction scheduled to take place in Dallas. Now finalized, this sale brought in just over $17 million with about 3,200 lots of coins ranging from nice collector pieces to extreme rarities. While news outlets often only concentrate on the gloriously high-end items, I prefer to cover a wider range.
In the preview we covered a number of Mexico City Royals, including a Philip V 8 Escudos 1714 Mo J in stunning MS66 condition. This gorgeous coin sold for $288,000, while its counterpart, the Philip V 8 Escudo Royal of 1715 M0 J, realized $24,000. The 1715 was conservatively graded MS63, but I think there are only two known examples. The 1711 MXo J 4 Escudos sold for $108,000 in MS65 and along with the gold came a 1667/6 Mo G 8 Reales Royal in XF45 which also realized $108,000.
The gold coins of Scotland in the Heritage NYINC auction were as sought after as expected. The James VI 20 Pounds realized $180,000 in XF40 and the Mary Y Frances I ducat of 60 shillings brought $216,000 in fine and with tooling to the design. The 1593 James VI “Hat Piece” of 80 shillings in AU55 sold for $90,000 and the Young James VI ducat of 1580, a lovely AU55, went to its new home at a price of $55,200.
Other highlights from the preview included a stunning 1874 SP67 cameo 50 cents of Newfoundland. That coin brought $60,000. An exceptionally rare Elizabeth gold 5 Roubles of 1759 in AU58 struck for Russia
