Photography has been integral to the hobby, ever since cameras and film became available to those interested in rail transport.

Initially, photography was a means of recording aspects of railway history. This is still a very important aspect of the relationship between photography and railways, but gradually railway photography has developed into a hobby in its own right. Many are fascinated by and attracted to the appearance and aesthetic appeal of railways, and the emergence of quality photographic equipment now available to the man in the street has meant a huge surge in interest in this particular pastime, which has almost as many genres’ as railway enthusiasm itself.
