Run Plex media server on your NAS drive
What you need: Plex; Network attached storage (NAS) drive Time required: One hour
If you read Issue 590’s Cover Feature, you’ll probably already know that we’re big fans of the Plex media server. Put simply, Plex is a wonderfully easy way for you to set up your own streaming service, letting you access all your photos, music and videos from any device, wherever you are.
But while you can install the Plex server on your PC, that might not actually be where you keep your media files. Even if it is, you may not be too comfortable leaving your computer permanently switched on in order to get the most out of Plex.
Instead, if you have a network-attached storage (NAS) drive you might be able to run your Plex server on that. The software is available for several of the most popular ranges of NAS drives – you can check the full list at www.snipca.com/36817.
Plex will run on any NAS mentioned on this list, though some may struggle with transcoding (changing the format or quality of a video) to suit different devices. Here, we’ll show you how to get Plex up and running on a NAS.
