Stand-up woman

in the past year or so, Kura Forrester has cemented herself as one of the funniest people in the country, earning a Billy T Award and a legion of followers through series such as Golden Boy, Educators and, of course, Shortland Street.

Fans on Facebook have praised Kura and her Shorty character Desdemona “Desi” Schmidt for making the show exciting and “livening up the place”, calling her no-nonsense, witty nature “very refreshing”.

While she can’t take credit for any of the writing, Kura’s character definitely has some of her DNA, thanks to the fact she has friends in the writers’ room who know her so well they’ve been able to play to her strengths.

“I’m really lucky because I’ve got a great character with great lines and the writers are really generous,” says Kura, 35. “One of my best friends in the whole world [Jessica Joy Wood, who directed Kura’s Billy T Award-winning show ] is a script producer here, so I often find lines in my scripts that I
