SOUL PURPOSE
The landscape is surreal. Mount Aderg stands out in the distance, like a photoshopped screensaver. Motorcycles ride the waves of sand but in less than an hour the wind will have erased their tracks, like those of the camel caravans that passed the day before.
It’s hard to imagine that the Sahara of today, an immense desert of sand and stone, was once a green landscape dotted with lakes and rivers. Two days ago we landed in Atar, which was bathed in sun and nestled between old plateaus reaching 400m, in the centre of the “land of the Moors”.
New Gate Travel’s 4x4s took us from the airport to our hostel. First, briefing. The boss introduced himself: first name Jean, last name Philippe. Years of experience under his belt. He promised excitement but preached humility in the face of Mother Nature.
