Front doors say a lot about the period and status of a house. They also suffer exposure to the elements and wear and tear from frequent use. Worse still, lack of maintenance may lead to decay, while the removal or replacement of door furniture – especially locks – can leave lasting scars. These issues can be incredibly damaging, not only to the appearance of a door, but also to its structural integrity.

• Note if there is peeling, bubbling or cracked
