A green DRESS
Kate had first seen the dress in a street market by a canal in Amsterdam when she was 18. She had been travelling through Europe by train with her best friend Sue before university and though the girls had set themselves a strict daily spending limit, she knew, as soon as she saw it, that she just had to have it.
‘Oh, Sue! Look at the colours in that dress!’ Long and flowing, it was made from emerald-green silky material. Sequins scattered the batik patterned fabric.
‘Wow! That’s gorgeous – definitely your colour!’
‘But it’s 20 guilders – that’s a whole day’s spending money,’ Kate sighed.
‘It’s not that expensive, really,’ said Sue. ‘And you could spend less tomorrow.’
‘Maybe,’ said Kate, moving through the other stalls selling clothes and records, handbags and rugs. ‘No point buying it now, though, I’d only have to carry it around.’
‘WILL YOU TRUST HER WITH IT? I MEAN, AT THIS STAGE IT’S PRACTICALLY A FAMILY HEIRLOOM!’
