The 99% Rig

ome of the most common advice you’ll hear from tackle retailers given to those starting out in fly fishing is, “you need some form of indicator and a nymph”. Fair call, it’s an effective method in most situations as trout predominantly feed sub-surface, but when I see a budding angler midstream on the Hutt River, middle of summer with a huge Taupo-style shuttlecock indicator flailing away, struggling to cast this unwieldly rig on a 5 weight rod, I cringe!
