Severn Valley loco department prepares for the new season

THE winter closed period is a busy time for those in the engineering department at the Severn Valley Railway, but these are no ordinary times.

The line’s new head of engineering, Martin White, said: “We are planning for the new season, though when we will actually start, we don’t yet know. Clearly, nothing will happen at February half-term but we do hope we will be running trains from the beginning of April, so that’s what we are working towards.”

Under ordinary circumstances, the railway would be preparing and repairing tired locomotives after a busy season, ready for the new one, normally due to start at the February half-term break before getting up to full speed from around Easter time.

Although locomotives were well-used during the pre-Christmas period, with the main stations falling into Tier 2
