This is the Personal Issue, so it only makes sense to focus on personal essays. Personally, I love a good personal essay. When done well, they are less essay and more personal story with an emphasis on the storytelling.

More than just an entertaining anecdote, personal essays can cover a range of emotions—serious, thought-provoking, romantic, heartwarming, horrific, and humorous. At the end of the day, personal essays are nonfiction, but there’s a great craft to structuring a true story in a way that’s compelling.
