When I was at school people would say, “Are you a Stones fan or a Beatles fan?” And I’d say, “Fuck off, I’m a Kinks fan.” I used to watch Ray Davies walking around Highgate in tears, and I’d wonder why someone so brilliant and famous as Ray was walking around in tears.
