Owing to the failing health of George III, the Regency was legally established on 5 February 1811. The Prince of Wales – the king’s eldest son – began his tenure as Prince Regent, which continued until his father’s death and his own succession to the throne as George IV on 29 January 1820. However, while these dates are for the formal Regency, the period is often considered more broadly. For some, it might begin as early as the French Revolution of 1789 and continue to the end of George IV’s reign in 1830, or to the end of his younger brother William IV’s reign in 1837.
