As I walked out onto the verandah, my gramps’ face lit up.

Patting the chair next to him, he smiled as I sat down and waited for him to weave a story.

‘If people just stop talking and listen, they’ll learn more, Girly,’ Gramps always said.

Years on, after two decades working in the social work department of a busy public hospital in Melbourne, I actively listened every day to patients, family and carers.
