NDC This time last year we were in Spain as guests of friends on their annual monteria in the mountains outside Yeste. This year, we’ve all travelled much less thanks to the restrictions enforced on us by the C-word (which will never appear in this column). Thankfully, these international sporting friendships are robust and happily able to survive a fallow season or two.

I have an enormous soft-spot for rural Spain; few places in Europe can match it for scenery,, in different regions, with the intervening night spent in “one of the family’s palaces”… Anywhere else, this would sound odd but here it was issued without a suggestion of grandeur.
