Flood warning
IT had started raining shortly after I got into work. I had a complicated job to do in the workshop, sorting out the electrics on a Defender whose wiring loom had been comprehensively butchered by someone with a bag of Scotchlocks and no clue. This kind of work requires intense concentration: with the door shut and the heater roaring I had little idea what was going on outside. In mid-winter I normally take a break around 3pm so that I can walk Boris the basset hound in daylight, but I opened the workshop door and it was still raining heavily, so I just took Boris for a very quick amble round the yard, shut the door and carried on working.
By 6pm I was about finished. All the electrics on the Defender now worked apart from the interior light, and it was a bit late to start pulling out the headlining to find the cause. So I locked up, started my little Peugeot and set off. It was still raining. As I drove into the village it struck me that there was quite a lot of standing water on the road. By the time I reached the crossroads it was about six inches deep. At this point I realised that something had gone a bit adrift
