The right cartridge for the job

What are the main considerations when choosing which cartridge to buy? Obviously, the right calibre is important, but generally the request at the gun shop is something along the lines: 12-bore, clay cartridge, fibre wad. Then it’s down to the price. But with a little more knowledge about your cartridge choice could you shoot better or are you just turning money into noise?
