Going black & white

Tune your Canon camera for monochrome images

Black and white photography allows you to capture evocative, timeless images, where the contrast of light and shade, texture, shape and form are the key components in a composition. There are two approaches to going grey with your EOS camera: you can either take a colour image and convert it to black and white later in editing software, or you can capture a mono photograph in-camera.

Shooting a colour image buys you peace of mind, because you can always bring back the colour if you don’t like the end result. It also gives you more control over the black and white conversion, particularly if you’ve recorded a Raw file rather than a JPEG. Doing it all in-camera does save you time though, and there’s certainly some enjoyment to be had in the challenge of crafting and perfecting a black and white shot when you take it.

Your camera offers dedicated mono shooting options under its Basic Zone point-and-shoot modes.
