I was intrigued when I read in Shooting Times that Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) — now NatureScot — had given a licence for the release of 150 of the top-of-the-range raptor, the gyrfalcon (Letters, 23 December). I decided I would do some more research. There was more to it than merely a licence to release these birds; they were recaptured a short time later as part of a falconry training system.
